| Sooner or later you will undoubtedly wish to start buying stamps from a dealer. Most stamps are sold by mail, by means of “approval selections”. These are sheets, booklets, or envelopes of stamps, marked with their selling price and sent by mail, “on approval”, to prospective buyers. The collector examines the stamps, selects the ones he or she wishes to buy, and returns the balance to the dealer, together with payment for those stamps being kept for their collection. |  |

 Approval selections permit you to see and consider a large number of stamps and choose exactly what you want before you buy. Collectors make it a point of honor to handle a dealer’s approvals carefully and return them promptly. It is a great tribute to the stamp hobby that millions of dollars worth of stamps are sold each year, by mail, in a spirit of mutual trust between the dealer and the collector.
