George T. Morgan designed this silver Morgan dollar. His initial "M" is found at the truncation of the neck, at the last tress, and on the reverse on the left hand loop of the ribbon. Coinage of the silver dollar was suspended after 1904. 270,232,722 silver dollars were melted under provisions of the Pittman Act of 1918. Later, in 1921, coinage of the silver dollar was resumed. The model for the Morgan Dollar was an 18 year old schoolteacher from Philadelphia. She lost her job when the school board found out that she had been employed as a model for the Morgan Dollar. |
